Ode to the Ordinary

"The kind of spiritual life and disciplines needed to sustain the Christian life are quiet, repetitive, and ordinary. I often want to skip the boring, daily stuff to get to the thrill of an edgy faith. But it’s in the dailiness of the Christian faith—the making the bed, the doing the dishes, the praying for our enemies, the reading the Bible, the quiet, the small—that God’s transformation takes root and grows.” Tish Warren, Liturgy of the Ordinary

"'Ordinary' time is where we encounter anew the humble and gentle soul from Galilee who lived most of His life in obscurity. He worked with His hands in a sanctuary that smelled of wood shavings and echoed with the music of stone hammers pounding bronze nails, likely crafting farming equipment and household furniture for families in His town. No doubt Jesus celebrated every Jewish feast and festival with His family, including a glorious Sabbath every week, but most of the life of our Savior was lived in 'ordinary time'. That is good news." Donna Hatasaki

"Your soul will never find rest unless it finds its home. We find it in the simple daily disciplines of asking ourselves, 'Is God here in this moment?' If He is not, He can be." John Ortburg

After the bright and "blingy" holidays, it feels good to me to make the bed and empty the dishwasher. To exhale in the routine. Until, of course, I feel compelled to break my boredom with the bright and noisy again!

Dear Lord, You are here. Settle me inside, so that bright or bored, I am silently stilled by You. Amen.
