Open Hands or Closed Fists?

Do not not try to save
the whole world
or do anything grandiose.
Instead, create
a clearing
in the dense forest of your life
and wait there patiently,
until the song
that is your life
falls into your own cupped hands
and you recognize and greet it.
Only then will you know
how to give yourself
to this world
so worthy of rescue.
“Clearing” by Martha Postlewaite

I took this picture on a silent retreat this week at Wesley Gardens in Savannah, GA, and spent time with the Lord and this poem, and these questions.

  • What does it look like to "create a clearing" in your life?

  • How does God sing you a tune, a note, a melody? Here's my song.

  • Are your hands cupped in expectation or clenched closed? What keeps me from outstretched hands?

  • What does it look like to wait on God, recognize and greet your calling in the world?

I'd love to hear your answers!
