Welcoming Prayer-Examen

“The symbol of Christmas—what is it?
It is the rainbow arched over the roof of the sky when the clouds are heavy and foreboding.
It is the cry of life in the newborn babe when forced from its mother’s nest, it claims its right to live.
It is the brooding Presence of the Eternal Spirit making crooked paths straight, rough places smooth, tired hearts refreshed, dead hopes stir.
It is the promise of tomorrow at the close of every day.” Howard Thurman

During this season of Christmas, I am learning to welcome the Presence of Jesus into the crooked, the cloudy and the uncomfortable places of life. I am learning to recognize the rainbow and hear new life as I see the Spirit stirring over the creation He loves healing, refreshing, bringing light to my soul.

As I reflect on 2019, the prayer of examen is helpful. I play back the events of the year that stand out in my mindthe good and the bad. And I look for Jesus in them. I welcome Him into those moments and see them differently many times. My soul and love expand as I see His love working for good in all things.

Judy and I invite you to this beautiful spiritual practice. Grab a journal, a cup of something, a friend or your spouse and be on the lookout for Jesus. Click HERE.
